@Tombo: How dare you mention the mysterious audition groove and then not post it?!
Just kidding...I've settled down again, but would be eager to hear more about it. Feel free to keep it a secret though, just in case we show up at the same clinic...

So you think I'm gonna giveaway the secret that got me the next CCEB and Sting tours???????
Just wait, it’s gonna be featured in my MD cover story: Tombo7/4 or How to make it big from the middle of nowhere. (How cool would that be!)

Seriously here it is:
4/4
H |x-xox-xox-xox-xo| (-=16th note rest, o=open hat)
S |-g--ag-g-g--ag-g| (g=ghost, a=accent)
B |k-kk----k-kk--k-|

Grooves best at 104-108 bbm. Write it in musical notation to better get the picture.

I would have liked to post a clip of him playing the groove ( I tape recorded my lessons) but I'm short on gear.

I find it's a pretty challenging beat. Dynamics are very important for the feel. Honestly, I've never used it in audition (since I never had to audition...) and don't play it as good as he does. In his hands this groove is soooooo damned funky. It is involved, yet the goal is to make you get down. IMO, only 2 guys play that type of stuff to perfection: Clark and Garibaldi; with Clark being more adventurous. His linear funk improvisations are so hip (check the Headhunters stuff or his instuctional video).

He said that sometimes you go to auditions and you hear guys before you just wailing on the kit. When its your turn, that’s the best moment to play that type of groove. Play it nasty. You’ll see smiles and chances are you’ll get the gig. So good luck!

Question

So if I understand this correctly,

X-XOX-XOX-XOX-XO (1-&A2-&A3-&A4-&A)

- the hi-hat opens on the "ah's" and is closed immediately after. Are you sure you don't mean O-XXO-XXO-XXO-XX with the hi-hat opening on the numbers?

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">That is correct.
Quick barks on the "ah's". HH with foot on quater notes.
That and the ghosted snare notes on the "e's" is a little tricky but that's what gives it its fonkiness.

Hey! Let's start a new post for the "audition groove"...everybody post their rendition...what are we auditioning for? It doesn't matter!

I hope Purdie doesn't post....

The hi hat/snare reminds me of Rick Marotta on "Peg". Fonky!
